Hello Racers!

I’m pleased to announce that we’ve finalized our racing dates for 2010, and have expanded our series to include a couple of new multi-day format gravity races which we are calling the Fluidride Enduro. The Fluidride Cup is also back with a new course on Schweitzer Mountain in Idaho which boasts over 2,000 feet of vertical per run. Anyone who remembers racing there can tell you that this mountain is the real deal with terrain that just keeps coming.

Our 2010 season will kick off with a Fluidride 2-Day Enduro in Hood River on May 1st and 2nd. We’ll be racing the Dog River Trail just outside of town on Saturday, and returning to Hood River to race down Post Canyon on Sunday. Each stage of this race will be about 20 minutes in length, with the lowest combined times in each category deciding the winner of the event. We’ll be announcing specific details and posting videos of the race courses shortly. Riders will be required to ride the same frame and fork in each stage of a specific Fluidride Enduro event, so choose your bike wisely. For the Hood River race, 5 and 6 inch bikes will likely rule the weekend.

The Fluidride Cup (Technical Downhill’s) will begin in June and July, as riders will return to Mt Hood Ski Bowl to ride one of the toughest tracks around. Winner of the first round at Mt Hood last year, JD Swanguen had this to say of the track “This is a manly track that deserves a lot more recognition”. Look for some track changes and updates for 2010 at Mt Hood.

August will bring new challenges to Fluidride Cup racers with the re-introduction of Schweitzer Mountain to Downhill Racing the weekend of August 20-22nd. Schweitzer has a quad chair with Whistler style bike loading which takes riders up 2200′ feet to the top of the track. This track will be a be brand new for 2010. With such a large vertical, Schweitzer may make a great future Fluidride Enduro location as well.

Mt Hood 3 Day Enduro: The Mt Hood 3 Day Enduro will take place in September the weekend of the 10th-12th and will serve as the final for The Fluidride Enduro Series. This is going to be the mother of all gravity stage races, with Stage1 starting one mile above Timberline Lodge at the base of Palmer Glacier at 7000′. The stage will drop over 4,000′ in 20 minutes and has a mix of warp speed roads and rocky singletrack during the first half, and ends with 10 minutes of perfectly buffed, dreamy single track. There are no real climbs on this circuit, but fitness is sure to be key in this stage. Stage 2 will be contested on the Technical DH tracks of Mt Hood’s Ski Bowl on Saturday the 11th. Courses here are fast, rough, and very physically challenging with times around 5 minutes. Pro Riders will tackle the extremely technical Pro DH track, while Category 1 and 2 riders will ride the “Sport” Course during this event. Stage 3 on Sunday morning will once again start high up above tree line where riders will repeat the first half of Friday’s Track (with a few changes likely thrown in). The course will end just before the “Cross Town Trail” section of Friday’s course, taking riders into Government Camp for a warp speed urban ending. Stage 3 will have fast times around 10 minutes. There is not a lot of pedaling required on this course, so hang on for a wild ride down the hill! As with our Enduro Season opener, riders will be required to ride the same frame and fork on each day. Full faced helmets will be required for ALL stages of this event for ALL categories. We understand that having a race starting on a Friday is not optimal for everyone, and hope riders will plan in advance in order to attend. We have very limited opportunities for permits for racing on Forestry Service Lands, and as such, had to schedule this event in September. A BIG THANKS goes out the US Forestry Service for their help and support in making this race a reality.

The Fluidride Cup Technical DH Series will wrap up on Mt Hood the last weekend in September (September 24-26th) where the new Series Champions will be crowned. There are currently four races scheduled for The Fluidride Cup Series, with the best three (including the final) counting toward the overall series.

We are hoping for more lift served opportunities here in Washington State soon, so keep an eye out in the future as we hope to bring more racing closer to home for Washington based riders. I want to take this opportunity to personally thank the guys at N’Dub Productions in Port Angeles for helping make the Fludride Cup such a success over the past two seasons. N’Dub has decided to put on their own series in Port Angeles, which is due to kick off with the Pro GRT opener April 23-25th. Thanks Guys and Good Luck!

I’d also like to welcome Integrated Project Group (IPG) to our organizational team. IPG has partnered with Fluidride to help keep NW racing going strong. IPG has put together a new website for the series called FLUIDRIDE RACING in order to make your racing experience as smooth as riding your bike. Look for online registration for both series’ to start on February 15, 2010.

We’ll be busy completing the site over the next month, so look for course preview videos and other great stuff to come soon.

Racing is alive and well in the NW!

Another season has come and gone and new Fluidride Cup overall Champions have been crowned.

Nearly 250 gravity addicts gathered at Mt Hood Ski Bowl for the 2009 Fluidride Cup Finals September 25-27. After two days of practice with perfect weather, mother nature showed her force with high winds on race day by blowing several bikes off the top chair. Due to the wind, it was decided racers would ride only the bottom half of the track, shortening the race times from just over 4 minutes to right around 2 and half minutes.

After months of back to back blue bird days, the circuit was as rough as I’ve ever seen it, with huge rocks, holes and ruts battering bikes and their pilots. The Evil Pro Men’s Qualifier saw Michael Silvestri (Santa Cruz/All Ride Academy) post the fastest time, followed closely by 2009 Fluidride Cup Series Champion Bart McDaniel (Fluidride/Evil) and Maxxis/Rocky Mountain world cup shredder Luke Strobel. Only two seconds off the pace was Mt Hood legend Jim Johnston aboard a 2002 Intense M1. Race favorite Bryn Atkinson fell victim to the pitted course during the qualifier, bouncing off the track and into a tree cutting his face, which ended his day early. From the sound of it, Bryn will make a full and speedy recovery from the fall.

In the Junior Expert Qualifier, Evan Powell (Yeti/Fox Regional) set the stage for the final run with a very quick 2:42, followed closely by Luciano Worl (Fluidride/Evil) 3 seconds back. Evan would go on to victory in the final round, posting a 2:40, putting him squarely in the mix with the pros. Caleb Doane (Legion of Dirt) took the runner up position with Tyler Gilsdorf (Downhill Zone Racing) rounding out the top three. The podium was book ended by Michael Nash and Luciano Worl in 4th and 5th respectively.

The Kona Pro Women’s division had a surprise visitor in the form of gated racing super star Jill Kintner (Red Bull/Crankbrothers/Intense), who handily posted the fastest times in both the qualifier and the final. Dawn Fidler (Speedy Beavers Racing) took the runner up position, locking up the series overall in the process.

Huge thanks go out to all the riders and sponsors who made the 2009 Fluidride Cup such a great series. We’re already looking forward to another great year in 2010.

While this race was called the Momentum Super D, it probably should have been named the Momentum Enduro DH, as there were no real climbs involved in the race. All categories rode the same track, which started at 6,000′ at Mt Hood’s historic Timberline Lodge and ended far below Ski Bowl giving riders a 4,000′ descent in 15 plus minutes!
The weather was great all week with sunny blue skies and near perfect dirt after some rain showers early in the week.
The Pro Men’s division was handily won by Nathan Riddle (Fluidride/Evil) with a course record of 14:58. Nathan was followed by Jared Hobbs (Fluidride/Evil) who came in with a very fast 15:31. Simon Lawton (Fluidride/Evil) rounded out the top three with a 15:38. Phil Wiering (Fluidride/Evil) narrowly edged out a hard charging Joel Armstrong (River City) for 4th place.
In the Women’s Division, newcomer Lindsey Harper (unattached) took the surprise win over Cannondale rider Leanna Gerrard (Monavie/Cannondale) and Kathy Malvern (Luna Chix). Lindsey was the only woman to break the 20 minute barrier with a smoking 19:14.
All in all this was a great event. Stay tuned for some great things to come from this race in 2010.

Big Thanks go out to the guys at Momentum for sponsoring the event. Thanks also go out to Dakine and Shiloh Cyclery. This race could not have happened without the help of Steve Kruse from Timberline – Petr Kakes from Ski Bowl/Hurricane Racing – and of course the US Forestry Service for giving permits for racing on Forestry Service Land. Thanks to all the riders who came out to make this a truly memorable and special event!

If you haven’t heard, there is a new Super D race happening on Mt Hood the weekend of September 12th and 13th! This is a race I’ve been dreaming of for years and am happy to see it come to pass. Big thanks go out to everyone at Hurricane Racing, Timberline Lodge, and at the US Forestry Service for making this happen. This race is being brought to us by the good people at Momentum Sports in Sandy Oregon. If you need any goodies on your way out or need parts after practice, be sure to hit them up!

Lars Sternberg and I were out riding that track on my birthday two years ago, and took some film of it. We had an epic ride down the hill. It was my first time down the top section in years, and my first time ever on some of the middle sections – and this was Lars’ first ride down the track. It was really fun to see what came after each hill and corner at speed! Thanks to Andy Tran for prepping the video. Also – SUPER BIG THANKS to FOX SHOX for making this video possible. Lars and I are both riding the Fox goods front and rear. Check out how our trail bike were performing at Hood here.

Round 5 of the Fluidride Cup has come and gone. Riders arrived to Port Angeles and were treated to blue bird skies, and a dusty, slippery and very fast course. I think most riders would agree that Dry Hill in Port Angeles is even tougher in the dry than in the mud. The courses get SO fast and loose.

The Evil Men’s Pro DH saw Aussie sensation Bryn Atkinson (Crank Brothers/Intense) take honors with local ripper Lars Sternberg (Transition) on his heals only 1.5 seconds back. Third place went to California’s Brad Oien (ODI-Southridge) with Kiwi shredder Kierin Bennett (Intense-X fusion) and JD Swanguen (Intense/TLD/ODI) rounding out the top five. These races are getting tough for anyone to win, especially the locals. Lars was the only Washington rider to make the top 5. So far Bryn Atkinson as attended three FR Cup events over the last two years, and has a perfect track record. The only other rider to do that has been Curtis Keene (Specialized) – who’s also has a perfect 2 for 2 FR Cup track record. Now we just need to get these two to the same race and see what happens…

In the Kona Women’s Pro DH, Dawn Fiedler (Speedy Beavers Racing) took the win over Leanna Gerrard (Cannondale) by only a second. Some close racing to be sure. Nice job ladies!

Top Honors in the Junior Expert Men’s Division went to Luciano Worl (Fluidride/Evil) who’s time was fast enough to net him 9th overall, and a few bucks to be used toward his trip to Australia for the World Championships – Go Get em’ Looch! Evan Gisdorf (Downhill Zone) took the runner up position. Third place went to Andrew Widman (Finatyk). Great to see Andrew tearing it up. I can remember only a little over a year ago when Andrew was making the switch from Sport to Expert. Way to pin it Andrew!

Big thanks go out to everyone who made their way out to Dry Hill. Thanks also go out for a job well done by the guys at N’ Dub Productions as well as the entire crew at Hurricane Racing. These guys are a big part of making this event happen, so be sure to thank them when you see them.

Of course we’d be nowhere without our great series sponsors – Huge thanks go out to: EVIL BIKES, FOX SHOX, KONA, E-THIRTEEN, CLIFF BAR, SCOTT, JONES SODA, BRASHERS AUTO AUCTION, SHILOH CYCLES (thanks for the HUGE raffle), CORSAIR BIKES, GRAVITY, MACE, ODI, STEVENS PASS, ROCKSTAR ENERGY (awesome job with course decorations!), DAKINE, TRANSITION, AND PINK BIKE.

We’ll look forward to seeing everyone for the final round on Mt Hood September 24-26th

-Simon

Sunny skies and a very dusty track greeted riders for practice on Friday and Saturday leading up to Sundays race. The track was very rough and difficult due to the blown out course and a tricky rock garden the guys at Hurricane Racing threw in for good measure. In addition to the rock garden, several other changes were made to the top part of the track to keep riders on their toes. Mountain weather can change very quickly, as mother nature showed us on Sunday as riders awoke to rain and hanging mist, which made the track surface even more treacherous, and visibility nearly non existent.

In the Evil Pro Men’s Downhill Qualifier, the conditions proved to create some larger than usual margins between riders. Luke Strobel (Team Rocky Mountain-Maxxis/Rockstar Energy) ran the fastest initial time, clocking a 4:08 with Bryn Atkinson (Crank Brothers/Intense) in behind him with a 4:12. In the final the two riders switched with Bryn running the fastest time of the day with a 4:08 to take the win in the Evil Mens Pro Downhill and the $1,000 check that went along with it, courtesy of FAT TIRE FARM, FLUIDRIDE, and EVIL BIKES. Luke Strobel ended up in second position in the final with third place going to Mikey Sylvestry (Santa Cruz/All Ride Academy). Bart McDaniel (Fluidride/Evil) and up and coming Eric Loney (Project 529/Santa Cruz/SRAM) rounded out the top five.

The KONA Women’s Downhill proved to be a very close race, with the top three riders all on the same second! In the end, Sara Johnson (Velobella) narrowly took home the win over Chelsey Stevens (Wheelsport East/POW Gloves) and Amy Laird.

In the Cat 1 Junior category, Evan Gilsdorf (Downhill Zone Racing) handily took the win over the rest of the field – and taking home the $100 courtesy of FOX SHOX, with his brother Tyler Gilsdorf (Downhill Zone Racing) following suit to win the Cat 1 19-29 category by a whopping margin of 12 seconds. The brothers Gilsdorf are two of the hardest working young riders in the NW, so it was great to see them enjoy well earned victories on the same day. The 30-39 Cat 1 Mens race was won by Jim Straatman (Logo Bible Software) while the 40-49 division was taken by hard charging Brad Watt, aboard his new Evil bike. Brad’s time was fast enough to put him in the top 10 overall for the day – good going Brad!

Thanks go out to all the riders who made the trip to Mt Hood to do battle with the mountain and incliment weather. Big thanks go out to Brad at Shiloh Cycles in Gresham Oregon for another amazing raffle. Racing in the NW wouldn’t be possible without the help of everyone who helps out. Thanks to these fine companies – racing is back! Evil Bikes, Kona, Fox Racing Shox, E-13, Dakine, Scott, Pinkbike, Rockstar Energy, Corsair Bikes, Transition, Gravity, Jones Soda, and Mace.

There was a lot of build-up for the 4th annual Mt Ashland 12-mile Super-D this year as registration sold out in the month prior to the race. Next year I’m sure it will reach Downieville status. This year saw an all star cast of racers, Miles Rockwell, Adam Craig, Tyler Moreland, Kirt Vorhies, Jason Moeschler, Willow Koerber,Greg Herbold, and Eric Carter, to name just a few of the big name Pros to show up. And that doesn’t even include all the other ripper athletes who booked up the 225 ( around 50 pro’s) or so slots that were available. This year saw the closest battle between 1st & 2nd we’ve ever had here, but first a little history.

For those of you unfamiliar with the course I’ll try to lay it out for you. The start is at the Mt Ashland ski lodge at 6500 ft elev. from the start you can see the approximate area in Ashland where the finish is at about 2000 ft elev. Then you dive into a few miles of old road bed turned double track under a canopy of firs. After sprinting off the start & basically tucking & coasting for these first few minutes the joy ride comes to an abrupt end where you make a 180 and start up a 10% grade with about 500ft elev gain over about 3/4 mile. The worst part is after you make that 180 you’ve got a good 45 seconds to watch over your left shoulder to see if the guy who started behind you is making time on you while you’re suffering.

After the climb there is some pristine flowing singletrack for a few miles that eventually dumps you out onto a super fast decomposed granite fire road. A couple miles of drifty corners and it’s back to single track in the form of our local DH race course, followed by some swoopy single track and then a steeper bit of switchback track to the finish line. One thing I think a lot of the racers liked is that there are about 3 places on the 12 mile course where you’ve got a chance of a flat–So if you are cautious there you’ll more than likely get a clean run. Ha!–More on that later.

This years conditions consisted of darn near perfect dirt, supplied by daily thunder showers up to the day of the race, until the last couple miles where it finished on super dry loose granite( which is always the case for that section unless it’s actively raining on it). It was foggy and cold for the morning start times up on the mountain and really blowing fog up to about the halfway point down the course where it gave way to overcast conditions and then finally the sun poked out at the bottom. Remember around 5000 vertical so things can change quite a bit.

I don’t know how else to describe the race other than from my perspective. I started second off the line 1 minute after Miles Rockwell’s standing sprint off the line. I cruised the first couple miles knowing about the climb that was rapidly approaching figuring I would start the climb mellow and ramp it up as I went. I started mellow but never ended up speeding up much. Still I was able to catch Rockwell just as the course turned DH for a while. Hit the 3 miles of fireroad and the fog at the same time. No big deal I’m rockin’ the goggles and I know that road so I kept my speed up. Popped out of the fog at four corners (about half way down the hill) entered catwalk trail doing mach-a-little-faster than-I-shoulda-been-going, Gee-d out in the rock garden jammed pedal into ground which simultaniously bent my crank, broke my pedal, broke my freehub body!, and launched me into the air at an awkward angle towards the LAST tree in the garden. Hit the tree while in the air which sent me into a horizontal helicopter blade style spin. Bike spun off into woods and I was left with enough time to think about the Super-D kit of choice (The Skinsuit, with half shell helmet…AKA skivies and a half shell) before hitting the ground in a baseball slidin’ into home slide.

Got up. Got bike. Shake it off. Point it towards the trail and wammo here comes Jason Moeschler my minute man. Damn already a minute back. Get on the bike. Pedal floppin around. Broken freehub body= can’t pedal=hemoraging time. Soon Rockwell recaptures me. I crash again (minor). Next Adam Craig passes me while I’m walking skateboarding my way along a bit over a mile of flat & climbing. I keep going. Next Timmy Evans passes me. More flat stuff. Coast…kick kick…Coast. I’ll spare you the rest, I did not do well. I did have a pretty good result on the Avid Chainless Challenge the day before. But that’s for a different post soon.

The cool thing was how close the battle was for first place and just how fast those guys were going. Jason Moeschler posted a smokin fast 33:47.52 which was a new course record until Craig came through with a 33:45.21 Ouch! I’ve had a ton of respect for Moeschler having known him for a few years now and I’ve know for a while that he could rip this course. I gained a whole new respect for Craig though. The thing you may or may not know about that result is that he showed up at midnight the night before, got up race morning, got a cup of coffee, rolled up to the the start line having never even seen the course before, never once ridden it, and set a new record! Nut’s. Sam Koerber rounded out the top three with a 35:18.01

On the Women’s side Willow Koerber had a clear victory with a 39:57.55 followed a few minutes back by Sharon Hill and then Jamie Stamps. For complete results from all classes go here

Huge thanks go out to Simon @ Fluidride. Also a special thanks to SRAM for stepping in to support this race. I think their backing is a big part of what made this years race the biggest badest one yet. Next year no crashes.

Much of the track was fresh, just having been cut by Jim Cairn, Todd Olson, Phil Wiering, Brad Watt and a number of other skilled rider/builders. Their idea of what would make a challenging and fun track did not dissapoint. The top of the track started with lots of broken shale and then went into warp speed down “Cannonball” where riders were reaching speeds near 50mph. The bottom of the track included some nasty rock gardens, and of course some good old NW loam – the dirt was so dark, dank, and fresh that it was very hard to see the roots on the trail – riding the loam by brail was what it was all about – great stuff. The EVIL Men’s Pro Downhill had 41 entrants from across the country, and even a couple of international riders. The pace in qualifying was fast, with Lars Sternberg (Transition) taking the top spot with a very fast 4:08. Lisa Myklak (Fox/Black Market) took the top seeding spot in the KONA Women’s Pro Downhill.

After qualifying, we had about a 6 hour wait while the amatuer riders battled the course. Alex Hansen (Project 529) took the win in a very fast Cat 1 19-29 category, while Matt Patterson (Dirt Corps) had a great day taking the win in the Cat 1 30-39 Category. Jason Moon (Boon Dog Bikes) took the win in the Cat 1 40-49 class by a narrow margin over hard charger Brad Watt aboard his new Evil. Chelsea Stevens (Wheel Sport East) took the win for the Cat 1 women.

After a nice rest, the Pro Men and Women as well as Cat 1 Juniors went to the top for the final where we were rewarded with an amazing view of Mt Hood in the afternoon sun. The track was in good shape, although it was a lot rougher than it was 200 riders earlier. I had a really fun run, then waited at the bottom for the last 12 riders to make their way down the course and watched as the hot seat changed hands a number of times. In the end, So Cal ripper JD Swanguen (Intense/ODI/TLD) had the fastest run with an incredible 4:02. Lars Sternberg (Transition) came down last, and almost took the win from JD, ending up in 2nd place by just over a second. Third place went to Fluidride/Evil rider Phil Wiering, who has been on a tear this seaon. Watch out for Phil at the next round – he’s on pace to run with anyone who wants to bring it. I caught up with JD after the race to see what he thought about the course and he had this to say: “The track at Mt. Hood was an amazing track that demanded all kinds of skills. Whether you were fisting it and flying white-knuckle at 50 m.p.h., pinning through the tight and technical rock sections, or ripping the dark and loamy woods section, you had to be on your toes at all times. I definitely can say that Mt. Hood is a manly track that deserves more recognition. I will definitely be racing at Mt. Hood again.”

The Women’s Pro division played out much as it did in qaulifiers with Lisa Myklak taking the win over Katrina Strand (Oakley/Shimano) who was warming to the course and getting faster with each run. Joy Mutoli (Team Mutoli) rounded out the top 3 for the Pro Women.

In the Junior Category 1 race Justin Wyche (Division 26) took the top honors with Evan Powell (Yeti/Fox regional) and Evan Gilsdorf (Downhill Zone) rounding out the top 3. Luciano Worl (Fluidride/Evil) had a fast run going, but ended up tasting some fresh loam, and settled for fourth place overall in a field of 30 Cat 1 Juniors. Chase Schmidt (Dirt Corps/Transition) had a break through ride for 5th place in the stacked field – nice going Chase!

HUGE thanks go out to Brad at SHILOH cycles in Gresham Oregon for the massive raffle. If you live in the Portland area, be sure to shop at Shiloh to support the guys who support your sport. Shiloh can be reached at 503.665.5538. If you see Brad Delzer at the races, be sure to thank him for the raffle!
